5. Uses commonly available parts!

Aren't solid state amps buzzy & cold sounding?

When any guitarist uses one of the top name distortion pedals to create their guitar sounds, then they are already using the same type of solid state technology that Award-Session uses inside BluesBaby!

BluesBaby's 'Restricta' power amp is different... it ensures buzzy, cold tones never happen. Prepare to be shocked!

What do they sound like?

Imagine a small 1 x12" Twin Reverb® sounding amp with built in distortion and weighing as little as 10.6kg (~23lbs). BB has that classic American tone. But, is so much more versatile with monster 'on-the-edge' breakup ability along with sweet power amp distortion. And, very controllable volume in the livingroom too!

Tip: If you like Eric Clapton's Strat sound on his 'I Still Do' album, then BB will do that for you too - with no FX added!

Both BB22 & BB45 have the same pre-amp... so will sound identical, except BB45 will be louder and have more clean headroom

How is BB different from the Sessionette?

This is difficult to answer given the limitations of the written word for describing sounds

One is not better than the other... they are different designs, but share some similarities

BluesBaby is more adept at rock styles than the Sessionette, due to its 'post overdrive EQ.' Sessionette is more suited to Roy Buchanan, country, jazz and blues like tones. But a good distortion pedal can change that beyond belief!

However, as standalone amplifiers, both shout classic American tone from their hearts!

Finding your tone will be a journey of experimentation and frustration at times... but BluesBaby WILL give you a solid platform to work from, whatever kind of music you play

I use my BluesBaby 22 in a covers band with a fairly loud drummer and it copes pretty well. So for the average working man's club or pub gig, it's just fine and its power amp breaks up nicely when it does finally run out of steam!

But let's be honest... trying to copy a tone from a record will be virtually impossible because of the way they are created with layered effects and overdubs... not even the original artists can do that live, so let's not waste too much time on that activity!

Playing guitar at home

Because of the way our hearing works, playing any amp at home will not sound the same as it will on stage when played loudly.

All guitar amps played at low volume levels in a domestic situation will expose a slight harshness in the tone. This is normal and NO ONE can eradicate this affect. Read more here

Servicing

Regular servicing of the type that is usually associated with valve amps, is not required for solid state amps. There is nothing inside which 'runs down', like valves do. So there are huge running cost savings over time, compared to valve amps

For all amplifiers, heat is the one thing that makes amps unreliable. High levels can shorten the life of most of the components inside... especially power transformers, electrolytic capacitors, resistors and even the solder!

Award-Session designs its amplifiers to run cooler than valve amps and budget solid state amplifiers. This involves costly hardware and more adequately rated components. This is reflected in the cost of our amplifiers

There is no need to 're-cap' solid state amplifiers in the way it is considered essential for valve amps, as there is far less damaging heat to dry them out.

Fed up with 'multiple' Blues Junior failures?

Good news, BB22 or BB45 chassis will both also fit into a Fender Blues Junior cabinet without any modification needed! It is a straight swap... that simple!

If you've suffered multiple expensive failures with your BJr and have had enough, then a BluesBaby chassis 'transplant' may be your best solution!

Associating it with a Blues Junior is doing it a great disservice... although I do see how and why the amp came about in the first place. I can't stop playing mine.

BluesBaby 22 & 45 Specifications

BluesBaby Control Panel

New Model From March 2017...

'High Clean Headroom' variant added!

BB45 is now available with extended clean headroom for players who use guitars with hotter puickups; or just want it to play jazz or standards, etc, without the worry of distortion creeping into the tone until the amp reaches full output. Great with all pedals and FX processors too

This does mean that the amp will not create as much 'preamp distortion' as the standard versions

It is designated BB45/HH. Available in both combo and chassis only formats

  • BB22: 22 Watts RMS into an 8 Ohm load - via our unique logarithmic power amp driver circuitry, fattening the tone as you play louder!

Choosing Your Speaker

Take special note! The speaker is the most important component in your guitar amp!

It physically produces the air waves that your ears detect as sound. They produce cone break-up modes which the electronics has NOTHING to do with... be it a valve or transistor amp!

These 'speaker generated harmonic tones' are mistakenly credited to 'valves' by guitarists, and is really the speaker misbehaving in a good way. This, so called, valve amp sound is actually caused by beneficial defects in the speaker's thin paper cone.

The art of designing a good guitar amp, is knowing how to exploit speakers behaving badly to achieve the great guitar sounds we've all become accustomed to!

About Speaker Sesitivity - dB

The speaker sensitivity figures quoted show how much power the speaker can turn into acoustic output via its cone. How loud it will be for a given power input. It is measured in dB and is NOT a linear scale.

A 100dB speaker is considered very efficient. A 94dB speaker is not... so always choose a speaker with a the highest figure

Out of interest, for a 100 Watt amp to be twice as loud... it will have to be 1000 Watts!

Celestion Seventy - 80

V-Type

We say: If you like 'twang' or 'chime' in your guitar sounds, then this is probably the one for you. Making it a great 'all-round' choice! The standard speaker installed in BB. 80 Watts/8 Ohms/98dB

Fitted in BB, the whole amp
weighs only 13.5kg!

Included in BASE price

Celestion A-Type

A-Type

We say: A warmer overall tone. Turning up the amp's treble produces a 'thicker, punchy' vibe. Nice for vintage American pop and R 'n' R tones. Perfect for jazz players! 50 Watts/8 Ohms/98dB

Fitted in BB, the whole amp
weighs only 13.4kg!

Adds £10.00 to the base price

Celestion Classic Lead 80

Celestion Classic Lead 80

We say: This has to be one of the nicest speakers Celestion have ever made! Good all round tone balance covering most musical genres... and efficient too. A great choice in our opinion. 85 Watts/8 Ohms/99dB

Fitted in BB22, the whole amp
weighs 15kg!

CLASSIC LEAD 80 WILL NOT FIT
INTO BB45 MODELS

Adds £21.00 to the base price

Celestion Creamback NEO

The LIGHTWEIGHT Revolution!

Century Vintage

We say: Ultimate Neodymium LIGHTWEIGHT & EFFICIENCY with CLASSIC tone rather similar to the V-Type speaker; covering sixties right up to the present genres! Brilliant all-round speaker for the seasoned player looking for valve amp warmth without the valve amp weight!

A little more expensive, but worth every penny to help protect from back damage or pain! 60 Watts/8 Ohms/99dB

When fitted in BB45, the whole amp weighs only 10.6kg/23.4lbs!

Adds £55.00 to the base price

Celestion Century
Vintage
NEO

Century Vintage

We say: LIGHTWEIGHT & EFFICIENTCY. Aggressive 'cut through' tone with vintage rock tones. All the LOUDNESS without the weight! 60 Watts/8 Ohms/99dB

Fitted in BB45, the whole amp
weighs only 10.6kg/23.4lbs!

Adds £79.00 to the base price

Celestion Ten 30

Century Vintage

We say: The 10" Celestion Ten 30 combines warm lows with a vocal mid-range and an articulate top end. The clean sound is open and revealing; push hard and you're rewarded with full-blooded Celestion grind.
At 95dB sensitivity, it's not as loud as the other 12" speakers listed, but has 'that' 10" character. 30 Watts/8 Ohms/95dB

Fitted in BB, the whole amp
weighs only 10.2kg!

Reduces base price to only £375!

Customer comments on BB22... "...just as loud as a Deluxe Reverb®"

Customer - Little Jay, Netherlands speaks about BB22:
"The 22 watts are perfectly comparable to a Deluxe Reverb, it delivers around the same volume and headroom. This is one amp that does not suffer from the distinction between solid state Watts and tube Watts!"

Meet BB's Designer

Stewart Ward

Stewart Ward with his favourite guitar, a 1963 Fender Telecaster

In 2017... I will have been designing and making guitar amps for fifty years! YES 50! Although making them professionally didn't start until November 1979. It's flown by... well time does when you're enjoying yourself!

I can't believe how much fun I've had meeting many famous people during that time... can't remember all of them, but Stevie Wonder, Les Paul, Leo Fender*, Larry DiMarzio, Geoff Whitehorn*, Chet Atkins, Buddy Guy, BB King, Jerry Donahue, James Burton, Jan Ackerman... are just a few. And the many techical folk in the industry, whom you just would not know the names (Ivor Davies*), that have helped create much of the equipment that musicians take for granted.

I am so happy to have been a small cog in that big wheel!

*Especially good geezers and thanks for all your help and time to chat technical (Leo)!

Trannies vs Tubes. Can we put it to rest now... please?

A British guitar magazine recently said...

"Fact: A well maintained, high quality valve amp will give you more than half a century of service. We don't buy into the idea that valve amps are inherently 'unreliable', but there's no doubt plenty of players are searching for valve tone without the erm, downsides..."

Award-Session says...

"Surely, the fact that any amplifier needs to be so well maintained in order to keep it reliable is a damning statement in itself? It implies a commitment to ongoing high cost 'consumables' (valves), heat related damage and fragile construction methods - in many cases.

It will set you back £60-£100 plus labour to revalve a typical 15-45 Watt amp. Isn't it obvious to any amplifier owner, that solid state amplifiers are less cost in the first place, do not rely on consumables to keep them running and require servicing much less frequently! Almost not at all if well designed in the beginning!

A good solid state amp can provide far more than 'half a century' of service... at a fraction of the cost over its lifetime!
Session started making quality solid state amps back in 1981, and that's thirty five years service already... many are still going strong... some untouched during this time!BluesBaby:22 & BluesBaby:45 are the first solid state amplifiers recognised to be able to meet that challenge."
